How Do Acne
Treatments Work?
Mild acne troubles are usually best cared for by topical
ointments. More extreme cases may be addressed in a variety of
ways including oral antibiotics, ointments, and physical
treatments such as chemical peels and drainage.
Physical acne
treatments must be carried on by a dermatologist.
Although popping pimples is a form of physical treatment, it is
ill-advised. It can lead to acne-causing bacteria to spread and
may result in scarring. Physical remedies done under controlled
problems minimize risk while providing the best outcome.
Exfoliation
The top layer of skin can be extracted either
chemically or applying abrasion. Chemical peels are
performed using salicylic acid or glycolic acid. These
work by eliminating a microscopic layer of skin cells to
unclog pores and take away the buildup of dead cells. The
same result can be attained by applying an abrasive cloth
or liquid scrub. Glycolic acid remedies can be performed
every couple of weeks over a period of about six months.
All the same, salicylic acid remedies are easier on the
skin and are often included in over-the-counter medicines.
They can be used on a daily basis.
Comedo Extraction
Comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) can be hard to reach
by a dermatologist using sterile instruments. An aesthetic
cream is employed in the exact area and then the comedones are
extracted using a tube-shaped instrument which clears the top
to allow removal of the stopped up skin cells and sebum. The
procedure is usually followed by an application of antibiotic
cream. It is paramount that you do not to try this at home.
Scraping or picking at pimples can result in infection and
permanent scarring.
Drainage
extreme acne can sometimes result in cysts to form under the
skin. These cysts can be painful and disfiguring. Smaller cysts
can be cared for using cortisone injections which flatten the
lesion in one to two days. Larger cysts should be drained and
surgically hard to reach. Drainage can reduce the pain
associated by using cysts and also reduce the chance of
scarring. It is done in the dermatologists office through
sterile instruments. It is important not to try to drain cysts
without a professional because of the risk of infection which
could result in permanent scarring.
Light Therapy
Light therapy is at times applied to combat the acnes
bacteria that cause acne. It is particularly useful in treating
remote areas but may have a short term effect. The routines
unfortunately does not do anything about the production of
sebum or the accumulation of dead skin cells.
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is valuable for handling the scars resulting
from acne. The procedure can be applied for both surface level
scarring and also deep tissue scarring from serious acne
problems. Research is presently being performed on the use of
lasers for acne coarse of action. Many approaches are being
studied - burning away the follical sac which creates the hair;
burning away the gland which brings about sebum; and developing
oxygen in the bacteria to destroy them. The therapy is not yet
known if laser acne processes can lead to deep damage to the
skin.
